Urban Jungle

Friday, 16 December 2005, 12:47 pm, me

I find it rather amusing that people are impressed with my uncanny knowledge of the places and roads and sometimes bus service

Was to meet up with the other half of the core group at Chinatown market for dinner after blading at ECP. So there we were at Marine Crescent thinking of what is the best way to get there. Or rather only I was thinking - Jiabin hadn’t the slightest idea.

197 a direct bus but it goes through a very congested route down New Bridge Road. So we thought of taking 16 down to City Hall MRT and take a train to Outram. However, while waiting for 16, 196 came and making a quick mental calculation, decided to just take it all the way and find our way there.

I think Jiabin got quite worried at the phrase “We’ll find our way there somehow”. heh

196 was a relative smooth journey given it takes a route that is not congested at that time, through Mountbatten and then Nicoll Highway. Alighted along Shenton Way and began our trek through the urban jungle.

Our little adventure
Our short trek

Think Jiabin was quite amazed when we hit Amoy street and he saw the Tua Pek Kong there. It was kinda like a flash from the past, with the old shophouses and narrow streets right in the middle of the CBD, and a giant Watsons just smack in the middle. I guess it had a rather surreal feel. Oh yah, he kept repeating that he had no idea where we were.

Now we had to get across from Amoy Street to Ann Sang Road and not being very sure if there’s a through way, took a lift up and cut across the MND carpark. But once on the other side, we saw some kind of an entrance that had the same design as on the other side. I’m very sure that that’s the way through. I mean there has to be some way to get through.

Well we did reach our destination and we did take the shortest route through. Yay. And after all that, Jiabin will tell you he still had no idea where we were that night. Heh.

Ok it’s me

Wednesday, 14 December 2005, 1:50 am, me

From Jiabin’s blog:

And I discovered the biggest secret of the day which left me in utter shock (while xiao hei and sophia was in total hysteria). The people at MFM read mi blog. I was stunned. I was asking veronica where mla was, and she said oh, she’s not working today. Then I wondered… hmm. How do you know who mla was? And veron happily told me about oh, you know, our MANAGER saw this blogpost about this satisfied customer who wrote on his blog about how much he enjoyed the food at MFM during their visit for XTINE’s birthday, how great the service was especially from MLA. He printed out the blogpost and stuck it somewhere in the restaurant as a reminder to all the staff on what good service is about. My jaw dropped when she said that. I was like…. oh mi goodness. THATS MY BLOGPOST. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!

Ok I admit. I think it was cos I got your entry tomorrowed. So I guess the whole world read that.

Jiabin, you could start sidelining by reviewing eating places on your blog. Heh

6th Love Language

Wednesday, 6 July 2005, 1:02 pm, me

You might have heard of the 5 love languages: Words, Gifts, Service, Time and Touch.

In an MSN conversation with Asparagus and Kopi-O, the topic on me suanning Binbin came out and I causally and jokingly remarked that it was our way of showing love to each other.

But after watching the characters in One Piece scold and insult each other, I’m led to believe that suanning could be the 6th love language.

On the surface or to strangers it might seem otherwise but if you know the characters, you’d see that it’s actually how they express concern for each other.

I’m no expert in this so maybe somebody can write a paper on my hypothesis.

Categories

Friday, 27 May 2005, 9:34 pm, me

Finally got down to categorising my entries. Stephanie’s batch categories hack/addon did make the job easier though I had to make some minor modifications to get it working for WP 1.5.

One of the problems I often see is that people tend to create new category whenever they write an entry that doesn’t seem to fit into any exisitng category. What happens is a sudden explosion of categories and sub-categories with only a single entry in them. Now the categories are too specific to be of any use.

To prevent myself from falling into that trap, I’ve decided to create a few very general categories and specific ones only when there are enough entries to warrant it. Sorry Jiabin, but with the amount of suan you got and foreseeing many more, I’ve decided to create a special category for you. Now don’t complain about not being privileged enough.

Me having MPD?

Friday, 27 May 2005, 12:45 am, me

Just found out that some people (read a certain medical student) did not know that Justina has been posting here. You mean the author name not big enough is it? Er… yah actually it’s rather small but then you’re not blind yah?

Ok granted most blogs only have one author and it’s normal to assume that. But with entries like Southpark YK, A silly story for yk and My trackback I’d thought the title would be obvious enough. Yet even after reading the content have you never wondered why I was refering to myself in the third person? Some person actually thought I could be having a case of MPD.

Well some people do intentionally blog that way or really have MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) but the author tag clearly states otherwise. And her name is even listed among the friends link at the side!

Please… Wai Kay’s not suffering from MPD ok? Stop bugging him about it.

New layout

Friday, 27 May 2005, 12:20 am, me

After much procratination, finally got down to redesigning the layout to a 2-col format. It dose resembles the Wordpress Default but how varied can you get with a 2-col layout? Jiabin actually tot I meant 2-colour when I told him. Can’t blame him lah, he’s a med student after all.

Yah so I felt a 2-column format would be less cramp after a long post made my old layout look constipated. Looking at most of my works, you can figure I like white space a lot. The lack of it just grips me and since I don’t usually write long posts, this problem has never been noticed before.

Well now it looks much cleaner not having to squash stuff on both side. I don’t like users having to scroll to read the info stuff but this is for all you goons still using 800 x 600 res. But really, I shouldn’t be so compliant. Maybe I’ll design a theme for fellow l33t 1400 x 1050 users. heh

The old theme is still available using the theme switcher so choose your preference. Hacked the plugin so whatever settings you chose before will be defaulted so everyone will see my new theme at least once. hee

PS: One down Justina, many more to go…

Supreme Nerd

Sunday, 8 May 2005, 3:00 am, me

I am nerdier than 93% of all people. Are you nerdier? Click here to find out!Jiabin took a nerd test recently and was expecting to get like “100% KING NERD”. Please loh, I thought, Mr “Nerd Wannabe” is a Medicine student leh, how can compare to a Computer Science student. Your blog dun even have a trackback loh.

Anyway I aptly clicked on the link, breezed through the questions and tada, Superme Nerd. Hmm not that it’s anything to be proud about, just felt must some justice must be done. heh

Well this test brought back to mind a Nerd Quotent test I took 10 years ago. Got it from a BBS back then when the “Internet” still in its infancy and more commonly called the “World Wide Web”, and BBS were where the action was. It consisted of about 400 yes/no questions for easy scoring (I got 1 point for using a calculator to keep score) and was not very accurate given the binary valency of the questions. Still I got a score amounting to a “Closet Nerd”. Well I’ve learned so much in these years that I wonder what my score will be if I were to take that test again.

On a similar note, has anyone got an accurate “Nerd” test with read valid questions and not those crappy ones you usually see on ppl’s blog?

Aiyah just found out I kenna tricked by the elements question cos I thought there was a spelling error. But it turned out the error was intentional. If I’d gotten that right I’d have a score of 95 - Supreme Nerd God!

Jiabin’s a really good sport and has accepted the suanning without offence. Better to check first, dun want later kenna sue.
