An open secret

Thursday, 24 August 2006, 11:59 pm, me

It’s not a well kept secret but somehow I find people not knowing where Rochor Food Centre is. And neither do they know where Albert Street is even though they might have walked down it several times themselves.

Well that’s because Albert Street is no longer used for vehicular traffic and has been converted to a pedestrian way.

Yah and neither do people actually know that the air-conditioned streets of Bugis Junction are actually streets which still have a name like “Hylam Street and Malay Street”.

I’m sure many IT savvy folks know where Sim Lim is and how to walk there from Bugis. If you’re one of those who do then you’d probably have walked past Rochor Food Centre unknowingly.

Which is funny cos usually people know Fu Lu Shou Complex and the OG at Albert Complex but nobody gives two hoots about some boring building on the other side.

Rochor Market

Now that building my friends is Rochor Market, and in that market houses the best Cai Dao Kuey in Singapore.

On the surface the stall looks pretty plain and boring with no certification or awards, but you can tell it’s no ordinary stall.

Inside with a single kwali and his trusty fan, an old man fries the Cai Dao Kuey with gusto and style. Not to mention the long queue gives it away.

And since it’s only one cook and he cooks about 6 plates at a time, be prepared to wait really really long in queue.

Queued for about 40mins for a plate of piping hot Cai Dao Kuey today. But it was worth it. (=
