I can only imagine

Tuesday, 29 August 2006, 1:23 am, YXN

P. Gerald showed this video during service… It’s queer… I only saw it once, even though I attended 3 services… And, the person who served sound for 4 services also only watched it once… But it was a good video… Otherwise, said person would not ask me to blog about it on his behalf…

Me? The 出了名的 hum bao bao… Good thing I only saw it once… It makes one think about what one has and be thankful and grateful for everything God’s blessed one with… And it reminds one about how great the Father’s Love is too… awww… *sniff*

Work: Week One

Friday, 25 August 2006, 11:59 pm, me

Today I attended my second Networks (CS2105) lecture - my first being the introduction lecture in my undergrad days by a different lecturer.

And no I’m not retaking it, rather I’m teaching the tutorials for 2105 this sem and since I’m being paid, should at least show face in the lectures. But then I think it’s also a good idea to know what the lecturer is teaching so you’re not completely clueless in the tutorials.

And I collected my staff card today. (I’d have scanned it in but I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea)

Had lunch at the crowded canteen during the lunch hour. Found Ade occupying a pink table and plopped our butts down and then Melvin came and join us.

So we were just chatting and he asked if I was a staff now and I said yeah and he went, “Oh so now you can sit at the staff tables!”

W00t. And I completely forgot! Hahaha… I can sit at the “reserved for staff during lunch hours” section now. Sounds fun.

Staff benefits… unlimited print quota, nice P4 computer and office, portable HDD… it’s not so bad… for now that is.

An open secret

Thursday, 24 August 2006, 11:59 pm, me

It’s not a well kept secret but somehow I find people not knowing where Rochor Food Centre is. And neither do they know where Albert Street is even though they might have walked down it several times themselves.

Well that’s because Albert Street is no longer used for vehicular traffic and has been converted to a pedestrian way.

Yah and neither do people actually know that the air-conditioned streets of Bugis Junction are actually streets which still have a name like “Hylam Street and Malay Street”.

I’m sure many IT savvy folks know where Sim Lim is and how to walk there from Bugis. If you’re one of those who do then you’d probably have walked past Rochor Food Centre unknowingly.

Which is funny cos usually people know Fu Lu Shou Complex and the OG at Albert Complex but nobody gives two hoots about some boring building on the other side.

Rochor Market

Now that building my friends is Rochor Market, and in that market houses the best Cai Dao Kuey in Singapore.

On the surface the stall looks pretty plain and boring with no certification or awards, but you can tell it’s no ordinary stall.

Inside with a single kwali and his trusty fan, an old man fries the Cai Dao Kuey with gusto and style. Not to mention the long queue gives it away.

And since it’s only one cook and he cooks about 6 plates at a time, be prepared to wait really really long in queue.

Queued for about 40mins for a plate of piping hot Cai Dao Kuey today. But it was worth it. (=

Cell Day

Tuesday, 22 August 2006, 11:59 pm, me

Carecell (aka Cell Group aka Care Group aka “Bible Study”) has been changed from Fridays to Tuesdays, starting from today.

And it seems surprising that at least 4 people asked me for directions on how to get there. Well it’s not like it’s the first time we’re having cell there or the second or the third. We have been meeting at that location for like a few months!

I just wonder how all these months have they been appearing at cell without so much as to know how to get there. Maybe the change is cell day is the cause. Perhaps it’s only on a Friday then something triggers in their brain and instinctively know the way.

Ok lah not to suan my cellie folks, here’s the directions once and for all:

Green Lodge
Green Lodge - Where we have our cell

From school: Take either 74 or 151 to Dunearn Road, just opposite King Albert’s Park (or Emjie’s place). Then cross the overhead bridge and take 66, 77, 157 or 174, of which only 77 stops right in front of Green Lodge. The rest alight before the C.C. and walk.

From home (Tampines/Simei): Take a train to Kallang MRT and take 985 on the same side of the road. Alight before the C.C. and walk.

From Clementi: Take 173 and alight just opposite Green Lodge.

So now that you know how to get there, you’re free to join our cell anytime. (=

And this is specially dedicated to Sophia…

A day at the theatres

Sunday, 20 August 2006, 11:59 pm, me

Ok so Yixin and I only went to 2 theatres, and one was at night. So it’s not exactly as the title says… but close enough.

Second Link

Caught Second Link, a W!ld Rice play as part of the Singapore Theatre Festival this afternoon at the NLB.

What the play is, is essentially taking selections of Singapore texts and having Malaysian actors perform them. Then do it with Malaysian texts and Singapore actors. Which basically split the play into 2 parts: Riding the Nice Bus and Tikam-Tikam: Malaysian Roulette.

Without being critical, it is in my opinion that Malaysia has good writers, and Singapore has good actors. From that you should be able to conclude which half I enjoyed more.

It was thus unfortunate that we weren’t able to catch all the Malaysian literary works cos as the name goes, the audience had to “tikam-tikam” the order of the performance, knowing full well that the actors only had one hour to perform as much as they can.

The texts though diverse, from the hilarious, either by nature or the portrayal, to the emotional and artistic, were great. Makes me wonder why I never came across most of them.

But then again, I never did look. Maybe someday I’ll get down to getting the full text.

Passabe

Passabe by James Leong & Lynn Lee

Had complementary tickets for the local documentary Passabe at the National Museum, as part of the launch of Cine.sg

Passabe Tickets
Complementary tickets. Thanks to Shu Chiang!

The museum was so quiet that we thought we could be at the wrong place. Turned out that we were the only two present for the screening!

Thought it was really depressing for the organisers and wanted to chat with them after the show but couldn’t find them. Brought to mind a similar incident with a friend’s film festival some time back.

But heard from Juz that last nights response was rather good so we concluded that we’re probably the only idiots who aren’t so much concerned with what the PM has to say at the Nat Day Rally. Well at least not live.

Show was good. Got a little draggy in the middle but was otherwise a good documentary.

Here’s a quote from Lynn:

“When Passabe became a full-blown film. It was sometime in March 2004. We were sitting in our room at our guest house in Dili, wondering if we should just pack up and go home, or stay in Timor, keep filming and exhaust all our savings. We’d been shooting for a two months and knew we’d found an incredible story. But no one - not a single broadcaster we approached in Singapore - was interested in funding us. We were down to our last 500 dollars. We could go home and find decent jobs or slog on, trust our instincts, and face the prospect of going broke. It was a tough call. But we chose to stay. And that was when we realized that we didn’t have to conform to any broadcaster’s standards. We didn’t have to make a “traditional” documentary. We didn’t have a commissioning editor to answer to; no deadlines to meet. We could let the story tell itself, allow things to play out.”

Well that’s how docus should be. The rawness of the shots, the conversations and stories… Someone was nearly moved to tears… Makes it more true to life yah.

Currently inspired to shoot a docu too. Shoot only hor. Someone else can go edit it. Haha.

ただいま

Sunday, 13 August 2006, 11:59 pm, me

I’m back!

It was a great trip with lots of things happening. Was really blessed by the Kajang church even as we were to be a blessing to them.

There’s so much to say that I don’t know how to start and probably won’t. So here are the options you can choose: 1) Keep waiting for me to post something; 2) Find me online or in person and ask me about it; or 3) Go read someone else’s blog like Yixin’s.

Just some rather amusing conversation in the coach on the way back.

Lou: So what’s the first thing you want to see when you get home?

Me: Hmm… The front door of my home.

Everyone: ??!!

Me: Well if I got home and my front door wasn’t there, I’d be really worried.

Oh well. It did make sense to me anyway.

Happy National Day

Wednesday, 9 August 2006, 6:38 pm, me

Happy Birthday Singapore!

And I’m still in Kajang missing all the fireworks this year. Seems like we’re taking turns catching them.

Celebrated this morning singing Majulah Singapura with the trackers. Wanted to kapo the flag in the service hall but then couldn’t find any church staff to ask.

Anyway it’s kinda interesting how things are done here in M’sia. If you want more info, just go read Yixin’s blog. Saves me the trouble from updating. Heh.

PS (cos yx forgot): They dun sell plain marshmallows in the supermarket here!
