On Set
Was on a set the whole of last night, as an extra for some Wong Li-Lin movie.
Was fortunate to play one of the more crucial roles. The camera was suppose to pan around the scene and then follow me as I walk across the foreground so we all had to get the timing done right.
Because of that, I and another was the only extras who got the see the cuts. “Just so that we get the idea of what we’re doing” the director said.
Anyway the director was a lady and she had this sort of air around her. Not in a negative sense. Something like that of a commanding officer in the army. And her two assistants were running around anxiously, making sure things are right and setting people in their places, much like what the OCs do in the presence of their boss.
But the camera man was way cool. He’s got his own people that does all his stuff. To put into the same analogy, he’s like the CO of a supporting unit, and speaks on the same level with the director.
Was an interesting experience. Finally understood some of the things Justina said.
PS: As expected, the phrase “Lights, Camera, Action” is not what’s actually done. The actual sequence is “Roll sound” then a confirmation shout from the soundman (with the occasional “Quiet please!”), then clapper-board guy does his snap, then “Action”, the shouting which of course, is not done by the director.
