“Hell freezes over”
Ars CPU expert Jon “Hannibal” nicely sums up Apple’s transition from PowerPC to Intel in this article.
While I must agree with him that though the Mac user base has been won through such platform “evangelists” 1 - religous preachers without much basis - I still feel as sense of romantic nostalgia to see the end of a RISC processor.
“To sum up, RISC and PowerPC were always more important to Mac users as a sort of talisman, or banner around which to rally. They represented a technical ideal to which Apple (and by extension Mac users) always aspired though rarely reached.”
Oh well. I guess fairy tales just aren’t meant to be.
1 More so on the mobile products. As it is a known fact that Intel Pentium M laptops outperforms the Powerbook and cost much less, how else would you explain the rising popularity of the Powerbooks?
Here is a sample real-life benchmark for your reference.
