Road Hazards

Thursday, 23 June 2005, 1:57 am, me

It’s a proven fact that in Singapore, not all who possess a driving license can drive. In fact it’s such a trival proof that I shall not even bother showing.

Anybody who has taken the driving exams should know how unrealistic they are. Real parking lots where got poles one? And nobody purposely build roads like the S-cruve and crank course.

I’m sure we have come across people who can’t park even after they passed. And it’s not that they are bad or anything but they have been taught by their instructors to follow a standard sequence of turns to park at the driving centre’s lot. Like “full lock the steering wheel when the pole touches this sticker” or using a particular tree as a guide.

In the end they pass but then cannot park. End up denting and scratching other people’s car. And that’s only on parking.

This is what happens when instructors are assessed on their students’ pass rate. Their students only learn to mug and pass, but never actually learn to drive.

The traffic police should wake up their idea on who they are letting on the road. Being allowed to handle a potential “weapon” is a great responsibility. Such drivers are a danger to us all.

Coffee of the Day - Major Dickason

Wednesday, 22 June 2005, 5:08 pm, me

Major Dickason\'s BlendMajor Dickason’s Blend®
A Combination of the best coffees from the world’s premier coffee-growing regions.
Very full-bodied, complex, rich, and smooth.

The blend’s components contribute their regional characteristics but are balanced to make a well-rounded cup that is complex yet smooth.

Finally got my coffee from San Francisco and it was excellent. The strong aroma when openning the sealed bag was already sufficient to trigger a dopamine rush.

It’s really strong, full and rich. Truly a delightful blend. So much better than the blends you can get at the stores here. Looking forward to it every morning.

Thanks girl for getting me that pound of Peet’s. It’s really great. They really should open a branch here in Singapore.

US Indy Farce

WTF are teams still pointing the finger at the FIA about not building a chicane? I just can’t believe their immaturity.

In summary, for those not into Formula 1, nine out of ten teams initally refuse to race due to abnormal tyre wear unless the portions of the track which caused those problems be altered. In the end only 6 cars started the race to the disappointment of the fans.

To draw an analogy, it’s like asking to make your goal post made smaller cos your goal-keeper is too short to dive the length. Or asking for slide tackles to be banned from a match cos your team forgot their shin-guards.

It’s absurd right? To anyhow change the rules just cos of your own team’s negligence. To trivally admend the rules for any sporting event would surely diminish the standard of the sport. I applaud the FIA on making the stand not to bend the rules for this situation, though I’m still against the recently introduced tyre rules.

To quote Peter Windsor, Former Formula One public relations guru turned journalist:

“It’s the teams, these massively paid teams and drivers, who have a responsibility to the fans,” he insisted, “Not one of those Michelin team guys said ‘we made a horrendous mistake today and we take full responsibility’.

“All they did was blame the FIA, blame Bernie, blame Ferrari, blame Bridgestone, blame everyone else - but they never actually blamed themselves. Do you know how many teams from Michelin actually did the pre-USA tyre test to select the correct tyre for Indianapolis? Two - everyone else was at Silverstone.”

Which I’d wish I could say to the teams and Michelin to wake up their bloody idea and stop ruining the sport.

Disgusting Developers

Sunday, 19 June 2005, 1:48 am, me

vBuzzer, a software to allow mixing of Internet Telephony with Instant Messaging, has been found to be using the source code of Miranda IM in violation of several terms in the GNU General Public License.

These guys are the worst scum of software developers. I mean piracy (using software without paying) is one thing, but stealing free open-source code and passing it of as your own and making money out of it is another.

vbuzzer had an idea - yet they did not want to incur any development costs in their part for the software so they entirely stole and lied about the origins (not very well I might add) of their IM software and legally pretended it was theirs and they had full rights over it.

vbuzzer are in violation of several terms of the GPL and their use of Miranda IM’s source is now voided.

These types of companies are hurting Miranda IM - they want access to the source for free and lock it down but yet give back nothing in terms of support (donation or code) and their ‘code’ changes aren’t vital either because their modifications are geared to meet their end objectives, which are to hide the fact it is Miranda in the first place!

It’s pretty sad and expected, some will say we shouldn’t give the code away and that it’s our fault and we should quit whining about it, however they entirely miss the point of why the source is licensed to allow collaborative development not really external non community based development for some related monetary gain.

This is why you have talented programmers who work for free, but why do you think cyreve really left? why rainwater did? why I pretty much gave up and took my own development semi private?

No one cares.

Scums like them should be crucified. Where are the lawyers when you really need them?

Trails and Tribulations

Thursday, 16 June 2005, 11:59 pm, me

Hit the trails at Pulau Ubin today.

Surprisingly there are still a couple of nice trails left in Ubin after all that redevelopment. We only found one l33t trail and it was rather short. The rest were your normal gentle slopes on sand/gravel where it’s just fun to speed through, to hear the crunching of the gravel, bumping over the roots, and feeling your bike slipping as you push the speed to the limit.

Shanli on the l33t trail
Trails - Shanli on the l33t trail. Somehow it looks less l33t in the photo.

Didn’t manage to search and try out every single trail as Cheese got rather exhausted and can’t really handle off-road well. Crashed into me a couple of times even when I was at the side of the path. Dunno why she’s so attracted to me. Maybe it’s cos they keep telling her to follow me.

Blur Cheese brought a camera but then forgot about taking photos during the trip. Suddenly remembered that she brought and went back to the l33t trail to take a photo of us rushing down the slope. Only managed a shot of Shanli before her camera ran out of batt. -_-

Adventerous us decided to bash through a trail and found that it disappeared after going in too deep. Horlan-ded and donated blood while trying to find our way back thru the vegetation. Garang us decided not to use any insect replellant so we can soak in the Ubin exprience.

Ubin Bites
Tribulations - Blood donation drive

No seafood in Ubin due to budget constraints (of others. Since when do I have budget constraints with food? hee), but introduced nice food in Changi Village.

Interesting point to note. You’ll get first pirority on the boat if you have a bicycle with you. That’s cos there’s a legal restriciton of 12 passengers per boat, but none on equipment. And you pay $2 extra per bike. Go do the math and see why the boatmen like us cyclist so much.

Fuji Syusuke

Tuesday, 14 June 2005, 3:20 am, me

Fuji SyusukeJust finished watching the second last episode of Prince of Tennis.

Looking at how Fuji feels about tennis does remind me of myself. Somehow I can really identify with him on that.

If you have no idea who Fuji Syusuke is, go watch the anime. It has only 178 episodes.
